Are Botox Injections safe?

Botox has had a varied reputation over the years. From the initial health scares when Botox was first introduced as a cosmetic treatment, most people now accept that Botox is a safe way to treat wrinkles. Are botox injections safe?.  If you have any lingering concerns about the safety of Botox, let us put your mind at ease.

Botox for medical conditions

Years before Botox was used for cosmetic treatments, it was originally used in the medical profession to treat muscle spasms, eyelid tics and underarm sweating.  There is a long history of Botox safety.

Despite media scares and word-of-mouth rumours, Botox has a long and safe history. According to a 2005 study, there have only been 36 cases of adverse effects to Botox from 1989 to 2003, and 13 of those patients had previous medical conditions that may have caused the issues. The treatment has been approved as safe by governmental regulation bodies in over 80 countries across the globe.

Minor side effects

Botox can have minor side effects for a small minority of people. These include a slight bruising or skin discolouration.

Find a reputable aesthetic practitioner

Although Botox is now commonplace, it is important to remember that Botox is a prescription-only product. Botox injections should only ever be prescribed and performed by a qualified aesthetic practitioner, doctor, nurse, dentist.  So when you ask “are botox injections safe?” And are considering Botox, or any other Botox treatment, take time to find a trustworthy and reputable aesthetic practitioner such as Austin Brewer.

Book a skin consultation first

Always have a face-to-face skin consultation before using Botox. Discuss with your practitioner your medical history and the reasons you would like the treatment. Your practitioner should discuss how the treatment works and any minor side effects that may occur.

Botox vs Dermal Fillers: which is best for you?

If you have heard the term Botox vs dermal fillers, you will know that both treatments reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But what is the difference between the two? Read on the discover how these treatments vary and which is best for you.

Botox vs Dermal fillers – what’s the difference?

Botox is the brand name for a specific type of wrinkle treatment using an intensely purified protein. This protein is injected into the muscle to relax the area and diminish the surrounding muscle activity. Botox is a great tool for targeting specific lines, such as frown lines or crows feet.

Dermal fillers work by replenishing the natural level of hyaluronic acid in the face, which decreases as we get older. Hyaluronic acid supports the skin and can be injected into the face to ‘plump’ out lines and wrinkles. This is a great method to add volume to certain parts of the face, which may have sunk due to natural aging or a high impact lifestyle. Hyaluronic acid is also the key ingredient in lip fillers in Bournemouth.

What does each treatment involve?

Both treatments are injected into the target areas with a small needle. This may result in minimal swelling or bruising (but can easily be covered with make-up, if you wish). The side effects for both treatments will soon go, usually within 24 hours. Although you may feel a little discomfort, neither Botox or dermal fillers are painful procedures.

How long do they last?

The results from Botox treatment usually lasts up to three months, but this may vary from patient to patient. The effects of dermal fillers can last up to 18 months, depending on the volume of the dermal fillers used.

Austin Brewer on UK Talk Radio: The Ageing Process

Austin Brewer, facial aesthetic practitioner in Bournemouth.  Appearing on UK Talk Radio to discuss the impact of the ageing process and the various cosmetic treatments available.

With increasing pressure from magazines and tabloids to look younger.  More men and women are seeking cosmetic treatments to reduce the signs of ageing. Whether it’s to feel more confident in a job or to have a fresh-faced look, we feel that a youthful appearance is a sign of beauty.

What happens to the face as we grow older?

As we grow older our bodies stop producing collagen and elastin, making our face less voluminous.  Gravity takes its toll and ultimately our skin sags, which can become quite noticeable.  Up to 10 years ago, people chose facelifts as the ideal treatment.  Yet the recovery time for this surgical procedure has led to a search for less invasive cosmetic treatments, such as facial fillers.  Austin Brewer says, “‘Facelifts have had their time now.  What we’re looking at now is putting that volume back in to somebody’s face.  Giving them that youthful appearance to make them look like they did without having to use a facelift.  It’s not about pulling it up its about putting the volume back in’.

Facelifts can result in quite drastic changes to the face shape.  Whereas less invasive cosmetic treatments such as facial fillers can provide a much more natural look.

What are the psychological effects of looking younger?

Psychologically, no one wants to look older, and your appearance impacts your self-esteem. By using facial fillers to look younger in your face, this will mirror your confidence and ultimately makes you feel happier!

What are some ways to achieve a more youthful complexion?

Volumisation of the face can be executed with facial fillers.  Older facial fillers only penetrate the layer beneath the skin.  Whereas Juvéderm infiltrates deep under the fatty layer and are different to other hyaluronic based fillers, as they emulate and grow the existing collagen at the same time.

Which areas of the face would you use dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers can be used to rewind the ageing process in many areas of the face but are most commonly applied to the cheeks, jawlines and the corners of your mouth.  It is also used in noses, foreheads for an overall effect of plumper skin. Dermal fillers produce immediate results and are clinically the longest lasting filler available today.

How often would need to top up dermal fillers?

Regular facial filler top ups are needed every 4-6 months, whereas Juvéderm fillers can last up to 18 months, depending a few factors, including the area treated.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Botox In Dorset

How long do lip fillers last?

Many people visit the Austin Brewer Clinic for lip fillers in Bournemouth and ask how long fillers last?.  Lip fillers are like any non-invasive cosmetic surgery; and lip and aesthetic treatment results and longevity varies.   The effective period differs from person to person.

The treatment…

Once the injections are complete, you will see the effects of your treatment immediately. You may notice some mild and temporary swelling but this minor side effect will normally disappear within approximately 24 hours.

After the swelling has gone down, your dermal fillers should last between six and eighteen months. The time that dermal fillers are effective are dependent on the individual and also on the volume and areas being treated. Dermal fillers can be injected into all areas of the face, neckline, neck and hands.

At Austin Brewer we use hyaluronic acid in our lip fillers, which is considered a better, safer and longer-lasting alternative to collagen and fat injections. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is responsible for skin elasticity and tone. As we age hyaluronic acid levels decrease contributing to the effect of fine lines and wrinkles.

Another great thing about lip fillers is that they don’t need any maintenance. There is no need to use any cosmetics to increase the length, potency or effect, they will always remain looking perfect until your body naturally begins to break them down.

Austin Brewer is the leading facial aesthetics practitioner in Bournemouth, Dorset.   He has extensive experience in the field of non-invasive cosmetics.  As a registered nurse with the NMC and the only cosmetics practitioner registered with the Independent Healthcare Advisory Service.  You can be assured that you are in safe hands when you choose Austin.

Technological advancements

At the beginning of the century, it was fairly common for people to turn to collagen or silicone lip fillers in order to achieve a fuller look, but we’re pleased to say that things have moved on since then. Today, we use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – a natural substance which is already present in the skin.

The levels of HA in our skin decreases with age, but that doesn’t stop it working wonders for fuller lips. So how does the magic work? HA is renowned for its ability to retain moisture, in fact, it can hold up to a thousand times its original weight. It slowly absorbs into the skin, leaving a plumper look which emphasises the natural shape of your lips.

What you need to know

You’ll be happy to learn that the effects of lip fillers are almost instant, but now you’re probably asking if you’ll need to get the icepacks out. At Austin Brewer, we minimise the pain by using an ultra-thin needle and injecting small amounts of HA at a time, although you may notice slight stinging initially.

The after-effects of lip fillers vary depending on the amount of HA injected, however there is no reason why you can’t carry on with your day once you leave the clinic. The treatment has been designed to cause minimal bruising, and any swelling tends to disappear within 24 hours.

Everyone has different tastes when it comes to beauty and aesthetics, which is why, at Austin Brewer, you have complete control over the look you want to create. The procedure will be personalised to suit you, and we can adjust the amount of HA injected according to the level of volume you wish to achieve.

Why use Austin Brewer?

We have over 16years’ experience in non-invasive cosmetics and are proud members of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses. Austin has helped boost the confidence of dozens of women across the area by accentuating their natural beauty in one simple step.

If you’re not completely satisfied with the way your lips are looking, why not book a consultation at Austin Brewer? You’ve got nothing to lose. Lip fillers are simple procedures with guaranteed results and no maintenance required.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

Do lip fillers hurt? Lip Filler BournemouthAt the Austin Brewer Facial Aesthetics Clinic we get many clients interested in lip and dermal fillers. We are asked  what lip fillers are and how long lip fillers last.  Today we’re going to talk about the other aspect of lip fillers: do lip fillers hurt?

As a reminder lip filling or lip augmentation is a relatively short procedure. Typically an appointment lasts between 30 minutes and an hour.  But don’t worry not all of that time is spent injecting!.  At Austin Brewer, we provide lip fillers in Bournemouth using Hyaluronic Acid.  H A  is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that loses concentration as we age. Injecting Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers raises these levels for a short period (between 6 and 18 months).  So that you can continue to look your amazing self.

So do lip fillers hurt?

Please bear in mind that when the hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the area, there may be a slight throbbing or a stinging sensation.   However this discomfort normally fades a short while after.  We provide an excellent numbing cream and the filler itself also has a numbing agent.

As with any injection, the area around your lips will encounter some temporary but mild swelling.  But please do not  worry – this minor side effect normally disappears within 24 / 48 hours.  So by the next day you will see the results of your lip filler.  For some it can take a while longer for everything to settle, so if you are considering treatment for a special occasion, please ensure you leave enough time.

What are the risks of getting lip fillers?

The great thing about the hyaluronic acid fillers that we use is that as it’s a naturally occurring substance within the body already.  The risk of allergic reaction is almost negligible.  The fillers we use are the safest lip fillers available today.  It also requires no maintenance!.  At Austin Brewer we are always conscious of making our procedures safer, simpler and less painful for our customers.

So, the short answer to the question “Do Lip Fillers Hurt?” – The answer: “Not that much”.

Austin Brewer has been providing superior facial aesthetic procedures including lip fillers in Bournemouth, for over 16 years from his private Clinic.  Servicing clients from London to Hampshire.  Austin is the only IHAS registered practitioner in Dorset and prides himself on his approach and care given to every client who enters his clinic.

inject-300x199How to treat lines wrinkles with Botox®

Botox® is a great wrinkle smoothing treatment.  It can be used to treat a range of areas including the forehead, around the eyes, jaw line, chin and more.

Fill the lines with dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a biocompatible facial filler solution that will boost your skin tone. Hyaluronic acid is present in the skin, but these levels decrease with age causing skin to become fragile and dried-out.  All dermal fillers in Bournemouth by Austin Brewer are 100% hyaluronic acid based.  If you want plump lips and they lack definition, then we also provide an excellent lip fillers treatment.

Dermal fillers will help to boost your skin tone and can treat the following areas:

  • Face
  • Lips
  • Neckline
  • Neck
  • Hands

Refresh your skin with skin needling

With little downtime and great results, our skin needling treatment has become a popular wrinkle treatment amongst many patients. Skin needling induces the skin’s self-repair mechanism by stimulating micro-injuries that trigger production of collagen within the affected areas.

Once treatment has been completed, your skin will be sensitive and may feel a little tight but after 48 hours and your skin has healed, you will notice the difference. We recommend a course of skin needling treatments for maximum benefits. This will help reduce fine lines, wrinkles and skin lacking in firmness/elasticity.

We are an authorised Dermaroller® clinic, and Austin has been trained to impeccably high standards.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip Fillers SouthamptonLip fillers (also known as dermal fillers, lip enhancements or lip plumping) are a cosmetic treatment which gives fuller, plumper lips.  Filler treatments can also correct and fix lip asymmetry and a gummy smile.

Originally, dermal fillers were made of collagen. Patients needed an allergy test to determine whether they were allergic to the collagen before every procedure. Advancements in technology discovered more biocompatible substances that don’t require prior testing, such as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in high concentrations in the body and the obvious choice for Austin Brewer’s lip fillers in Bournemouth.

 What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid might be a bit of a mouthful to pronounce, but it naturally occurs in the body and is present in the skin. It preserves moisture levels, boosts skin tone and provides shape, structure and volume to otherwise lacking lips. As we age, the concentration of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases.  When this substance reduces, the skin dries out and wrinkles start to appear.

We use hyaluronic acid fillers for these range of benefits:

·         Control over lip volume – As hyaluronic acid is injected the degree of lip volume created can be controlled

·         Less bruising – compared to other dermal fillers, bruises and swelling from hyaluronic acid injection is visibly less

·         Long lasting results – while not permanent, hyaluronic acid lip fillers last a long time

·         Relatively allergy free – because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body it is highly unlikely that you would be affected by a reaction.

·         Naturally hydrates skin – as hyaluronic acid is an intense moisturising agent; you’re effectively turning back time!

·         Almost instant results – unlike Botox®, you start to see the results of your dermal filler almost immediately.

·         Versatility – these lip fillers can be used for other areas of the face, including neckline, neck and hands

Cheap Botox & Fillers? – You get what you pay for……

Cheap botox & fillers…have you been seduced by the thought of having a medical treatment done “on the cheap?”.  Have you actually thought about why it is so cheap?.  Wrinkle treatments are amazing, and can have wondrous results.  However the product used needs to be purchased from a reputable pharmacy with a prescription.  They also need to be administered by a medical professional.  You obviously care about how you look to consider a treatment, why risk possible permanent disfigurement trying to get a “cheap deal”?.

Do Face Creams ever work?…well yes and no

Do you ever think about how much you spend on the latest must-have miracle serum?.  Have you ever questioned its claims to make you look so young you’ll be asked for ID the next time you go to a bar?!.

Do you ever wonder how they work?.  Well let me save you the valuable time and money that you are wasting and say that they don’t, not really.  Now don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good products out there and they do have some benefits.  But let’s be real ladies if those lines are really niggling you.  Why not do something about it with a wrinkle treatment that actually works?.  And before you think “oh I can’t afford that” let me ask you that first question again.  Just how much money do you think you spent on those “miracle serums” over the years?.

If you’ve continued reading I’m guessing you’re intrigued

Well the fact of the matter is Botox® works.  Do I hear gasps of “Oh I want to age naturally”.  What’s so natural about all those serums we spoke about before?.  And of course that old fear of: “but it’s poison, I’m not putting that in my face”.  Ok so let’s all calm down and talk facts.

Firstly botox has been around for a very long time (see our blog on the history of Botox® for all the important historical dates and discoveries).  Secondly it was used medically before it was used as a cosmetic treatment .  Thirdly do you really think that so many people all over the world would use it if there was any significant risk?.

The risks of botox and fillers in the wrong hands

So the risks, well the most important point to raise here is that the risk is only there if you are in the wrong hands.  Namely an inexperienced, one day course newbie.   Don’t fancy being a guinea pig do you?.  Or maybe the aesthetic practitioner that offers the deal of the century?.   Well I’m here to tell you, you get what you pay for.  If the “deal” is so attractive that you really want to put your face at risk .

Some of the possible issues that can arise if injected incorrectly are: weird eyebrow movement, your face dropping on one side, eyes becoming heavy & most seriously blindness.  Not to mention not actually having any botox injected at all, and then wondering why it doesn’t last.  Not such an attractive deal – I did warn you!

So I guess what I’m trying to say is let’s be a bit realistic.   Yes you do need to do your research and spend the amount on your wrinkle treatment that is realistic to what you are asking for.  For example if you have lips that are incredibly thin, no one and I mean no one is going to give you a full voluptuous pout for 1 tube of filler, no matter what they say!

Buyer beware

You can buy some very dubious fillers on the internet and I really dread to think what is in them.  But this is the filler that is being used for those cheap deals, it doesn’t last.  You will then end up having treatment done again and again.  In the long term causing more trauma to the area, risk of infection and possible lumps appearing and unfortunately it will actually cost you more in the long run.

The real deal that you will get is when you find a fantastic and reputable facial aesthetic practitioner.  The knowledge that you are in safe hands and your interests and safety are the most important thing.  Now is that worth spending that extra £20 on?.   I’ll leave you with that thought and if you would like to know more about any Botox® in Poole or Botox in Bournemouth by a very experienced and highly qualified aesthetic practitioner, check out our facial aesthetics website, and why not have a look at our Botox® prices while you’re there too!  Austin Brewer offers free consultations 7 days a week including evenings.  Call him directly on 07823 883888

How Long Does Botox Last?

“How long does botox last?” is probably one of the most popular questions I get asked along with “How botox works?”.  I will answer these popular questions about botox now for you.

Botox works by relaxing the muscles, which takes time.  Seeing the results of your Botox® injections depends significantly on the individual.  So how long does Botox last?.  For some, they will start to notice changes within 1-2 days after being injected.  For others, it would be between 5-7 days or even up to two weeks after the treatment.  The wrinkle treatment’s full effect can definitely be seen by the time two weeks have passed, when you’ll see your fine lines and wrinkles appear significantly reduced.  It is also at the 2 week point that we will see you again for a check up appointment to ensure everything is perfect.

Does Botox last permanently?

Unfortunately there is no fixed term of how long treatment lasts.  It normally lasts approximately 3 months however like any personal cosmetic treatment the timeline can vary.  For facially applied Botox, the results can last anything from between 2-4 months.
Botox is not a permanent solution and does require regular treatment if you really want to see the back of those wrinkles for good.  It is advised to book your next appointment and re-inject before the effects totally wear off.   This will increase the time the effects of Botox will last and ensure a smaller time frame to regain your desired look.

Austin Brewer is a leading facial aesthetics practitioner based in Bournemouth.  Servicing clients across the Dorset and Hampshire areas from his private clinic.   Austin Brewer is extremely experienced in facial aesthetics, he opened his clinic in 2004.  You can be assured that you will receive the best cosmetic care.

So what does botox do? we’ve all heard about it, but do you know what it can treat?

Botox isn’t just a one-trick pony.  As a muscle relaxant it has a range of cosmetic and therapeutic uses.   These can help solve a number of problems or issues.  By blocking the release of a chemical called acetylcholine.  Muscles can be relaxed for an extended period of time for a treatment that can last up to between 3-6 months.

The anti wrinkle treatment

As a cosmetic substance its main use is a skin treatment to smooth deep and persistent facial lines such as forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet.  This gives the appearance of a smoother, more youthful complexion by evening out the skin.

The medical uses

As a therapeutic substance its reach extends further. Hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) can be controlled with Botox® injections as it blocks the chemicals that turn on sweat glands.

Botox  has also been proven to reduce a number of chronic pains. Sufferers of back, joint and foot pain as well as those who suffer from frequent migraines have all found respite through regular Botox injections.

For those with an overactive bladder Botox can also offer a solution to an embarrassing and often socially limiting problem.

This purified protein is also used to treat movement disorders or muscle spasms such as crossed eyes (strabismus), uncontrolled blinking (blepharospasm) and cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), which is an involuntary muscle contraction in the neck that causes abnormal posture of the neck or head as well as abnormal movement in that area.
