What is Botox?

We have all heard of anti ageing or anti wrinkle, so what is the best treatment to keep this lines and wrinkles away.  Have you ever wondered What is botox? and what can it do for you?.

Botox is a muscle relaxing agent

Its full medical name is Botulinum Toxin type A.  Botox is the marketed name for Botulinum Toxin Type A and this particular product is produced by Allergan Inc.  In a controlled laboratory environment, although there are many other companies providing the exact same toxin under different product names.  It is a highly purified protein.  That has been approved for therapeutic and cosmetic application by the FDA in the USA and the MHRA in the UK since 1989.

The history behind Botox

Is one of interest and oddities.  A German scientist in the 1820s first discovered the origins of this toxin in a batch of sausages.  Over the next 100 years, seven strains were identified and purified as a protein.  But it was only in the 1950s that researchers turned their eyes towards muscles and the effects that this new formula had on them.  Ophthalmologist Dr. Alan B. Scott theorised that the toxin could be used to help correct or reduce eyelid spasms.  By the 1970s this was FDA approved on a small-scale and over the next ten years became a standard treatment for eyelid spasms.

It was at this point that another ophthalmologist, Dr. Jean Carruthers noticed that when treating her patients for eyelid spasms, their frown lines became reduced.  From then on, countless papers and studies have revealed Botox’s many uses.  From curing excessive sweating and alleviating different types of pain from joint pain to neck and shoulder spasms.  Botox has been the physical and psychological saviour of many.
